Do you have any Bible verses that almost make you burst into song when you hear them -- because you learned them in a song? I do. I try to contain myself most of the time in public, but I let myself go if I'm in the car or anywhere with my children. Today I read, "The joy of the LORD is my strength," (Even now my mind is humming the tune) from Nehemiah 7:10. Frankly, it caught me by surprise. I simply wasn't expecting that verse in the context I was reading. It was such a delight, I wanted to share it.
The people have returned to Jerusalem from their Babylonian captivity. Under Nehemiah's direction, they have been rebuilding the city wall. After the work was complete, the people "came together as one man," (and don't miss this), "They told Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses..." (vs. 1). When he simply opened it (vs. 5), all the people stood up, lifted their hands and responded with "Amen! Amen!" Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground (vs. 6).
They remained in this self-imposed assembly listening to the Word of God being read and receiving instruction from the priests, "so that the people could understand what was being read," (vs. 8). Then the Word tells us that as the people listened, they began to sob.
Can we even imagine what it would be like NOT to have access to the Word of God? Can we feel the longing they must have had to finally get to listen to it and be taught from it? Have we experienced the reverence they displayed standing to their feet as soon as the book was opened as an automatic, unsolicited, uncontainable response? And then to weep, so much so that the priests had to tell them this: "Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength," (vs. 10). In other words, "This is not a time to be sad -- it's a celebration. Time to party, church-style! Bring on the potluck dishes and pass them around!" Oh, how I wish I could have been there!
I may want to experiment with this on my own, so just remain calm if I pop up to my feet in the balcony when Andy opens the Book...alone. I'm just trying to experience the joy of the LORD in context for myself!
