The start of a new year always brings out a desire to by And a good book. But sometimes, good books are hard to find. I recently went through a very disappointing string of...well...books that were Less than good. I want a read that is going to catch my attention with the titled message / cover and speak a fresh Word into my life in a way that I can really feel like the author is sitting across the table from me. I realize this is sort of a high expectation, but it's what I'm hoping for every time I open a new book.
I found one I absolutely LOVED: A Beautiful Offering by Angela Thomas. I know I have been mentioning her in my tweets lately from the companion Bible study, but the trade book is fabulous. The book takes you through an encounter with the Beatitudes ("Blessed are the ____ for they shall ____"). While she brings you face to face with the Word of God for your life in these verses, she shares her own experiences, trials, failures, and hopes. This is someone I could relate with -- not because we share the same life experiences --- but because, when I read what she says and how God is changing her to be more like Him, the Holy Spirit in me shares a kinship with her. It says, "YES!" every time I encounter something familar about Him. I feel her sorrow when she shares her trials. I laugh at her humor because it is true to life and she seems like a real person. Most of all, I found myself in those pages and God spoke to me through them. I finished the book moved, encouraged and wanting more. (Thus, I'm doing the companion Bible study).
I don't know what you like in a good book. But if you are anything like me, Angela Thomas will not be disappointing.
