Summer has arrived at the Strange house. With a house bursting with girls, that means clubhouses made of blankets in the living room, lots and lots of nail polish, and special family outings. It's only the first full week of June, but the blanket clubhouse has already been created and dismantled, my toes are a bright blue (thanks to my five yr. old), and we just returned from a week of Family Camp. I highly encourage blanket clubhouses (or forts, if you'd rather) and magnificent toes, but Family Camp is the idea I want to share with you today.
Family Camp is the only vacation I have ever finished spiritually and physically refreshed. Frankly, most family vacations are stressful--all work, little rest, fostering the perfect ingredients for fussiness, shorter fuses, and bickering. By the time we return home, most of us need a vacation from the vacation or we are more than ready to go back to work.
At Family Camp at Pine Cove, for seven whole days someone else cooked, cleaned, entertained the kids, and took responsibility for the trash and linens. (Disney can't beat it.) As the kids made new friends while on banana boats and zip-lines, Chad and I enjoyed time alone, special dinners with other adults, a host of events such as horseback riding, biking, and boating, and attended our own speaker sessions. The food was tremendous. The teaching was excellent. The counselors are exactly what you want your kids to become. They even provided opportunties for parents to have one-on-one time with their teens in relationship-building events. The bottom line is we finish our seven days closer as a family than when we arrive.
If you are looking for ideas for a family vacation that go beyond the average nervious-tick-inducing adventure, Family Camp, like the one at Pine Cove is something to consider. Check out their website www.pinecove.com for pricing, military scholarships, and openings.
